Hospitality and tourism mean to me change to escape, make new memories and make people smile. Hospitality is very important and without its tourism and travel wouldn’t work. Hospitality work is something that I believe everybody should experience.
Culture for me is a mixed of things. Is the way you speak or dress. I like to think that culture is involved with our everyday life. Culture is our way of life. For me culture is food, performing arts, for example ballet, music, clothes, places and our language and way of behaving.
Finland’s culture is very calm and collected. We Finns like our personal space, peace and we appreciate nature and what it has to offer. Some of us are quieter than others. Our nature is very important to us, and it can be the place where we go to relax. In Finland chit chatting or small talk isn’t very popular.
Culture comparison
Finland, Ireland and Japan.
Using the comparison tool. The tool shows you different areas that you compare your cultures with.
The countries I have chosen are different to each other but also similar in some way. Japan, Finland and Ireland are very cultural, and they are unique in their own way. All three countries have their own special thing that everybody knows about. People love to travel; Japan and Ireland are very popular destinations.
The culture comparison tools’ first dimension is Power distance. It deals with equality and the fact that not everybody in society is equal. Finland is 33, Ireland is 28 and Japan is 54. So, Finland and Ireland have very little differences. Finland’s low score means that in Finland people are independent, hierarchy are for convenience, and everybody has equal rights. Japan is hierarchical society. So, it is natural that scores 54 on this dimension.
The second dimension is individualism. Finland score of 75 is the highest of them all. This dimension is the degree of interdependence a society maintains among its members.
Motivation towards Achievement and Success dimension indicates that society will be driven by competition and success. Japan’s score of 95 is very high. Ireland’s score is 68 and Finland’s score is 26. Finland is at the bottom of all three. At 68 Ireland is very motivated towards achievement. Finland scoring low on Motivation towards Achievement and Success, the focus is on “working in order to live”.
Uncertainty Avoidance dimension has to do with the way society and people deal with uncertainty and that the future can never be known. Japan at 92 is one of the most uncertainty avoiding countries. Japan has many natural disasters. So, Japanese learn to adapt to uncertain situations. Ireland’s score 35 is low. In Ireland ideas are important and they embrace creativity. Finland scores 59 on this dimension and that tells us that Finland has high preference for avoiding uncertainty. Finnish people need rules and structure.
Long term Orientation dimension describes how every society must maintain some links with its own past while dealing with the challenges of the present and future, and societies priorities these two existential goals differently. At 100 Japan scores the most Long-Term Orientation oriented societies.
Japanese see their life as a very short moment in the long history of mankind. With a score of 51 on this dimension, Ireland does not have a strong preference for either end of the scale. Finland scores 63 in this dimension, making it pragmatic. In societies with a pragmatic orientation, people believe that truth depends very much on situation, context, and time.
Indulgence dimension is defined as the extent to which people try to control their desires and impulses, based on the way they were raised. With a high score of 65, Irish culture is one of Indulgence. People in societies classified by a high score in Indulgence generally exhibit a willingness to realize their impulses and desires regarding enjoying life and having fun. The relatively high score of 57 indicates that Finland is an Indulgent country. People in societies classified by a high score in Indulgence generally exhibit a willingness to realize their impulses and desires regarding enjoying life and having fun. Japan, with a low score of 42, is shown to have a culture of Restraint. Societies with a low score in this dimension tend to be cynical and pessimism.
Hospitality and culture
Hospitality and tourism rely on culture. In Finland there is many hospitality businesses that use or provide Finnish culture experience. Lapland has many tourist attractions such as beautiful nature which offers amazing northern lights, forest, lakes and much more.
In the future I think that countries’ own cultures can evolve and change. Technology is always changing and that means that everything must change with it.
